Gen Z: why to choose hospitality studies and career?

Updated: Mar 26, 2021

Did you know that gen Z is more likely to work in the hospitality industry? Did you know that gen Z is one of the largest generations with more than 2.47 billion out of 7.7 billion people on Earth and apparently most open minded?

As an active member of Gen Z I strongly agree since I decided to begin a hospitality career, beginning from the studies. I currently study business administration in hospitality management at Hotel Institute Montreux and... believe me I couldn’t have made a better choice!

From my point of view the hospitality industry will never die, as people will continue to travel around the world and the most important thing is that it offers lots of employment since it is made of different sectors. By working in this sector, you will retrieve a lot of satisfaction and connections.

Studying abroad is not an easy choice to make but it is something that requires a lot of effort and courage from a single person. Before making such a big choice people are really scared and, in their minds, occur lots of questions, such as “am I doing the right choice?” “how am I going to adapt myself in that specific county?” “Will I make new friends?” No worries that once the hospitality students arrive in a specific destination the fears that occurred before leaving will disappear within a minute. Isn’t hospitality the art of entertaining and receiving guests? Exactly, it is like that!

I can guarantee you, based on my personal experience that from the first minute you step into Hotel Institute Montreux you can feel the very welcoming and international atmosphere; moreover I would like to precise that even if a person is shy or not very self-confident, it will become very extrovert because every day you will relate with new people and face new situations.

From my personal point of view studying abroad, depending on individuals’ personalities, has more pros than cons. By getting used to relate to people from different cultures, making very useful connections, doing group projects with people from different nationalities, welcoming different ideas than yours, learning about different cultures, improving foreigner languages and having more than qualified teachers who bring in class real life working examples makes you more advantaged in chasing hospitality career because you will be more open minded and easier adaptable compared to a person who has always lived in the same place; beginning from the fact that the person who doesn't travel a lot has not as many connections as you do!

HOSPITALITY IS A WORLDWIDE INDUSTRY OPEN TO WELCOME PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD AND MAKE OF IT A MELTING POT

One of the most common sentences from previous generations once they accomplished their studies was” school does not prepare us for working”; this might be object of a few misunderstandings since the school prepare us under the theoretical point of view but it is up to us, as individuals, to adapt ourselves to the working environment, find our passions and points of strength. In the last years schools from all over the world have given the opportunity to Gen Z to do internships in order to prepare them in the best way to face the working environment.

Internships from my point of view are very constructive, especially for the hospitality students because they make them apply what they have learnt so far by practicing it with real clients and show to the previous generations that Gen Z is willing to work hard.

Where your internship dream would be? By attending HIM, in the span of three years of studies you can choose where to do your internship and the position. Very soon I will fly to Dubai and I will start my internship in F&B department for 6 months, I am really excited about it!

Every year Swiss Education Group organizes an event called” International Recruitment Forum” where students get the possibility to meet recruiters and extend connections with big companies.

Since it has been shown that Gen Z grew up by using digital technologies, we cannot hide the fact that Gen z is “addicted” to social networks but people from different generations should not judge us because of that.

According to a survey led by business insider it resulted that Gen Z is likely to use Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and Facebook. We don’t have to forget that we will be the future target market, that is why companies are implementing the use of social media in order to promote their products and services.

By attending career and coach classes we were introduced to 2 quite new social media, LinkedIn and Hosco, where you can find internships and jobs; they are really easy to use. All you have to do is sign up for free, make your CV and start to apply for the offers you are interested in.

Just one last quick reminder… Do not forget to always keep your social media accounts professional in order to give a good first impression.

If you don't study the hospitality profession, you will never experience the joy of being in the hotel industry. We will not only improve the professional skills we already have, but also spend time and energy to learn other aspects of knowledge due to the diversification of colleagues, customers and situations, which will make us withstand any test.
