Gen-Z in the workplace, no time for hesitations & doubts

Updated: Mar 26, 2021

If you ask me: “Why should any company hire Gen-Z?” I will give you a lot of reasons for that.

To start with, I would like to say that mostly working with the famous hotel brand for 6 months made me realize how great it is to have Gen-Z in the workplace. The importance of having Gen Z in the hospitality industry was already mentioned in one of the previous articles by Klara, however, I would claim that this idea can be expanded for the workplace in general. Nowadays, almost every single company in any industry can benefit from hiring Gen-Z. It doesn’t mean that all the employees must represent the same generation, but the working environment should be diversified due to all the different members of staff.

I worked at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues in Geneva which is a wonderful property with rich history. Until the last moment I couldn’t believe that they actually hired me. I had lots of doubts like: “my French is not good enough for the Front desk, I don’t have any previous experience, I am too shy to talk to so many people during the day; What if I will disappoint them?” I suppose I was not the only one wondering about that before the first working day started, was I? In any case, get rid of hesitation and doubts! Stop asking yourself “What if…?”

Before my exams in high school one of my classmates gave me a little tip to focus on what I know instead of worrying about something I might not know. And that helped me realized a lot later in life. Going back to the topic, the only mistake of Gen-Z that I can point out is that we often underestimate ourselves. Yes, there are many stereotypes and opinions about us, but I am going to show you the other side of the coin, so that you don’t spend time for hesitation anymore.

People say that we are too dependent on social media, that too much time during the day we spend in front of computer screen etc. I believed that and thought I was wasting my life, but let’s have a look from a different perspective. We know a lot about technology and IT; we follow modern trends and are aware of many things happening in the world. So, hiring Gen-Z means having someone who is able to develop any conversation with the guests about anything with great pleasure, no matter if it is a popular event going on not far from the hotel, or a celebrity coming to Geneva. From social media we can actually get a lot of facts about fashion, cinema or travelling, and share this information with the guests which they really admire.

Another fear you may have is lack of experience and knowledge. True, we don’t have years of work behind, but what we have is the desire to learn, the ability to adapt to any working environment and strong memory. Gen-Z in the workplace is the example of a clear mind for any company. There is no need to change us, we are like a white paper ready to be filled with information. My manager told me: “Don’t be scared of not knowing something. Be scared of not having the desire to learn and improve.”

5 tips to get rid of doubts (by the author)

What I was trying to say, is that every opinion has two different angles. While you listen to all these people saying you’re not good enough, you will never succeed. So, prove them wrong! Try to see the best part of yourself, discover your inner world and understand how wonderful and unique you are. We are all not perfect, finally. But loving yourself and believing that you can do anything will make great things happen in your life. Thank you for reading this article, I hope it gave you a little bit of inspiration and left you no time for hesitation and doubts.

Why are you still here? Go get your amazing CV, forget all the fears, and finally apply for that position you are dreaming about. Stop asking yourself useless questions. Just get that job because you are worth it! And don’t forget to share this article so that more people get aware of this topic.
